Bitcoin Core Receives Over 1,000 AI-Driven Security Reports
More than 1,000 security reports have been generated from scans using language models (LLM) on Bitcoin Core. Developer Niklas Gögge proposes using artificial intelligence to strengthen automated testing but warns that it should not be relied upon exclusively. Artificial intelligence is facilitating the identification of vulnerabilities in Bitcoin software, which could increase pressure on Bitcoin Core and other ecosystem infrastructures. Gögge points out that, although Bitcoin software has received less attention from attackers compared to other sectors, the arrival of models that analyze large amounts of code at low cost is changing this dynamic. Gögge mentions that initiatives like Project Loupe and Bitcoin Red Team have generated over 1,000 reports, although most are false positives or hypothetical issues, and no critical vulnerabilities have been detected so far. Despite this, Gögge does not consider AI scans unnecessary but emphasizes that they should not be the primary security strategy. Additionally, he highlights the role of fuzzing, a technique that subjects software to various inputs to find failures. Bitcoin Core and secp256k1 have accumulated evidence of this type for years. Gögge suggests using LLMs to reduce costs in developing fuzzing tools and improve testing systems, aiming to anticipate future vulnerabilities.
