S&P 500 Closes Flat as 328 Stocks Decline
The S&P 500 closed down two points, masking a significant internal decline with 328 member stocks falling compared to 174 rising. Four sectors—technology, materials, industrials, and consumer discretionary—dragged the index down, while energy stocks rose due to increasing oil prices amid Iran-related tensions. Meta's rally, driven by optimism around its new Muse AI agent, contributed to the index's flat close, despite widespread weakness. The disparity between the headline number and internal performance reflects a pattern of top-heavy leadership, reminiscent of earlier this year when gains were concentrated among a few AI winners. Additionally, the 30-year Treasury yield reached its highest level since 2004, and the 10-year yield is on track for its largest monthly increase since October 2024, impacting cyclical stocks negatively. The KBW bank index has entered correction territory, down over 10% from its August peak, while Oracle's stock fell approximately 3.5% after issuing a force majeure notice regarding its New Mexico project, indicating challenges in AI infrastructure development. Rising yields and potential friction in AI capital expenditures raise concerns about how long a few stocks can continue to obscure the broader market's decline.
