Sony Seeks Dismissal of PS5 Buyers' $508M Tariff Refund Claim
Sony has filed a motion to dismiss a class action lawsuit seeking tariff refunds for PlayStation 5 buyers, claiming the demand for a share of the expected 508 million dollar recovery is 'speculative and illogical.' The company's lawyers argued that paying fair market prices for consumer goods does not constitute a legal injury. They cited inflation, currency fluctuations, and other factors as reasons for the price increases, without detailing specific cost breakdowns. PS5 prices rose again in March, shortly after tariffs were reduced, contradicting the claim that tariffs were responsible for earlier price hikes. Microsoft and Nintendo have made similar motions in court regarding tariff-related lawsuits. The Supreme Court previously ruled that the president cannot impose tariffs under the emergency powers act. Sony had raised PS5 prices by 50 dollars in August 2022, attributing it to economic challenges, and reported a tariff bill nearing 200 million dollars for the autumn quarter. No rulings have been made on the motions from Sony, Microsoft, or Nintendo.
