Michael Burry Calls for Market Crash to Halt OpenAI and Anthropic IPOs
Michael Burry advocates for a significant market crash to prevent the initial public offerings (IPOs) of OpenAI and Anthropic. He expressed this view in a post on X, stating that such a downturn would benefit humanity. Burry's comments align with a follower's joke about tanking the market to stop Skynet from going public, referencing the fictional AI from the Terminator franchise. Anthropic's prospectus indicates a potential valuation exceeding 2 trillion dollars, with a projected net loss of 42 billion dollars in 2025 and 518 billion dollars in planned cloud and infrastructure obligations. OpenAI has postponed its listing to 2027, with CEO Sam Altman deeming the current market conditions unfavorable. Burry has previously criticized the labs' pleas for a slowdown as self-serving and has recently shifted his investment strategy towards puts on AI-related stocks. The timing of these IPOs is uncertain, with reports suggesting Anthropic's debut may be delayed past the November US midterm elections.
