Federal Reserve Inspector General Finds No Evidence of Criminal Activity in $2.4 Billion Renovation
The Office of the Inspector General of the U.S. Federal Reserve announced that it found no evidence of criminal activity in the $2.4 billion renovation project at its Washington headquarters. The project cost increased from an initial $1.3 billion to $2.4 billion, with several issues identified regarding cost control and internal management. The investigation found no reasonable grounds for violations of federal law, and there was no need to refer the case to the Attorney General. However, management deficiencies were cited as a cause for the cost overruns. The Federal Reserve Board did not implement recommendations to set cost limits for past renovation projects, and issues related to a lack of bidders and inadequate internal management systems were also highlighted. The Inspector General's office recommended ensuring value for money in the remaining construction process and establishing a separate oversight body to monitor costs and schedule compliance. Federal Reserve Chairman Kevin Warsh stated that he would implement the recommendations and plans to appoint an independent external auditor. The Federal Reserve is renovating two historic buildings, with the aim of modernizing aging structures and consolidating workspaces to achieve long-term cost savings.
