Canadian 'Crypto King' Chooses to Defend Himself

Aiden Pleterski will appear without a lawyer before a jury in Toronto. Dubbed the Canadian "Crypto King," the 27-year-old is set to be tried starting October 5 in a case of fraud and money laundering involving tens of millions of dollars entrusted by investors. His trial is expected to last four weeks.

In Brief

  • Aiden Pleterski will represent himself before Canadian justice.
  • Investors allegedly entrusted him with about 40 million Canadian dollars.
  • The trial for fraud and money laundering is set to begin on October 5.

The Crypto King Arrives in Court Without a Lawyer

Pleterski had requested a postponement of the trial to have more time to hire a lawyer. The Ontario Superior Court of Justice denied this request. He will therefore have to defend himself before the jury. This case comes as crypto adoption reaches record levels in Canada, with a sector now much more closely monitored by authorities.

Judge Shaun Nakatsuru clarified that he would play a strengthened role during the hearings. He will be able to intervene on certain objections to prevent inadmissible evidence from being presented to the jury.

The trial dates had been set as early as June 2025. Pleterski reportedly attempted recently to gather enough money to fund his defense. His lawyer during the postponement request explained that family members were willing to sell assets to help him. The court did not grant additional time. The trial will therefore begin on October 5 and is expected to last about four weeks.

Nearly 40 Million Dollars Entrusted by Investors

The case primarily dates back to 2021 and 2022. Pleterski had built an image on social media as a young, successful trader, with luxury cars and a spectacular lifestyle. According to elements from the bankruptcy proceedings, investors allegedly entrusted him with about 40 million Canadian dollars. The criminal charges include fraud exceeding 5,000 dollars and money laundering of alleged proceeds of crime.

Prosecutors accuse him of attracting clients with promises of significant profits from trading crypto and currencies.

Cointelegraph estimates that Pleterski obtained about 30 million dollars from his subscribers and investors between 2021 and 2022. Bankruptcy proceedings reportedly recovered only about 3 million dollars for around 160 creditors.

Canada has been strengthening its response to fraud cases related to digital assets for several months. In March, the United States, the United Kingdom, and Canada launched a coordinated operation against crypto scams. Pleterski has not yet been found guilty. It is now up to the jury to decide.

The Crypto Case Had Already Taken a Violent Turn

The Pleterski case had long surpassed the scope of a simple bankruptcy. In December 2022, the young Canadian was kidnapped and held for several days. Several individuals, some allegedly linked to investors, were later charged in this case. Pleterski was reportedly assaulted and forced to record a video discussing the lost money.

Two years later, Canadian authorities have now charged him. The charges of fraud and money laundering were announced in May 2024 following an investigation conducted by the Durham Regional Police and Ontario regulatory authorities.

The case also comes amid a Canada that has become stricter with the industry. In March, 23 crypto companies lost their licenses in the country as part of increased financial oversight. Pleterski now faces a very particular trial: four weeks of debates before a jury, without a defense lawyer by his side. For someone who presented himself as the "Crypto King," the scene will be far less glamorous.
