Significant Discrepancy Between Market Predictions and Wall Street for U.S. September Non-Farm Data
The U.S. September non-farm employment report is about to be released, with market traders predicting that job growth will exceed the expectations of Wall Street economists. Data from Kalshi indicates that the market believes there is nearly a 60% chance that the U.S. will add more than 90,000 jobs in September, and about a 50% chance of exceeding 100,000 jobs. However, Wall Street investment banks are taking a more cautious stance on the September non-farm data. Goldman Sachs expects an increase of 80,000 non-farm jobs, with the unemployment rate remaining at 4.1%; Bank of America predicts only 60,000 new jobs, with 50,000 coming from the private sector. These forecasts show that Wall Street investment banks are not broadly betting on a significant rebound in September employment, with some institutions expecting job additions to be well below market consensus, reflecting a divergence between the prediction market and traditional macroeconomic forecasts. On Tuesday, after New York Fed President Williams downplayed the urgency of interest rate hikes, federal funds futures indicated that the market's expectation of another rate hike next month dropped from about 71% to 50%. The September employment report may be crucial in breaking this deadlock in interest rate pricing.
