Google Appeals EU Decision to Open Android for AI Services
Google has filed an appeal with the General Court of the EU in Luxembourg against a decision by the European Commission requiring the Android operating system to be opened to competing artificial intelligence services and to share search data with third-party providers. The company argues that such requirements threaten user security. Oliver Bethell, Senior Director of Competition at Google, noted that users utilize the search engine for personal queries, and sharing this data without protection could harm privacy. In July, the European Commission mandated Google to allow users to activate any chosen AI assistant via voice commands within 12 months. Regulators also require that by January 2027, third-party search engines gain access to data currently collected solely by Google. This requirement is not an official lawsuit but aims to change how Google services operate in accordance with the Digital Markets Act (DMA). Previously, Google was fined $1 billion in another case under this law.
