China Warns: Cryptocurrencies Do Not Guarantee Anonymity

The Chinese Ministry of State Security (MSS) warns that cryptocurrencies, such as Bitcoin, do not provide complete anonymity. Transactions leave permanent traces in blockchains that can be used to identify users. The MSS notes that digital assets are often used for crimes, including money laundering and fraud. Although cryptocurrencies make it difficult for authorities to analyze crimes, blockchain technology allows for transaction tracking, which can lead to the revelation of identities. Users must disclose their identities when exchanging cryptocurrencies for fiat currencies on centralized exchanges. Chinese authorities did not mention privacy coins like Monero and Zcash, which offer greater privacy. Nevertheless, cash and gold coins remain the safest assets for criminals.
